Scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers prefer simpler explanations and shorter stories; and what could be simpler than the null universe? Obviously the center of metaphysics. So overall the mathematical experience was fruitful, while a bit frustrating. Because, well, maybe there needn't have been. One could start by drawing a diagram, or by counting the number of rounds, or by considering a series that includes the number of matches played each round.
